When I moved in, BT advised me that I couldn't get broadband, we are too far away from the exchange. The engineer, when he installed the line decried this and said that we were just on the edge of availability. Most of the time I download at 0.4mps and most uploads are at around 0.3mps. hardly broadband speed!
Your download speed's nearly a quarter of what ours is down here at No.35, so it looks like there's maybe something else causing your slow connection. It's true though, we are at the edge of the limits for stable speeds because of the way our lines are fed out from the Alloa exchange, but they've certainly settled and improved in the 4 years we've been on broadband here.
Interestingly though, I've just had a visit from a neighbour who's been experiencing a drop in speeds the past week. He's with Tiscali and was wondering if we're experiencing the same. We haven't, although there was a couple of weeks over the Christmas break where things were a bit flaky, and our connections settled around the 1600kbps down, 600kbps down.
It looks like it's down to pure Donald Duck what you get, but I'd have a jiggle around with your cables if I was you and see if that helps
PS: Had a look around your website; interesting stuff, and it's great to find out about all the hidden talent that's tucked away up here in Delph Wynd. Don't suppose you've got any free samples lying around you're finished with....?
Signed up with Sky on their 'up to 8Mb' package - connection hovers around 1.2Mb. Not great considering our distance from the local exchange and the fact we're in a fairly new build estate :-(
You're lucky to be getting near 1Mb as the local exchange is Alloa, which is fed out on the main cable side through some really dodgy and very old cables (at least there's no aluminium cables in the route) and the kit in the exchange is the Alcatel DSLAM that's renown for it's BAD transmission. I'm with Talk Talk, great service, but, still on the same copper network as everyone else so sits around 825Kb down and 200Kb Up.
Sorry if this bores you, but I'm a tech nut.
Thanks for the site.
Being a 'tech nut' I'm sure you've tried installing a filtered ADSL faceplate on the main BT socket...? Certainly made a difference for us, and with a bit of under-the-bonnet tweaking on the router the speed has levelled of above the 1Mb. Plus, the ritual sacrificing of numerous chickens to the ADSL Gods helped too.
...Kidding of course...
Thanks for registering and being one of the first to get involved.
